Ciuffo ribelle biondoarancio. Sguardo da padrone. Labbra serrate in una smorfia sprezzante. Così è servita la caricatura del presidente statunitense Donald Trump sul marciapiede antistante Palazzo Zevallos, in via Toledo, arteria commerciale e turistica di una Napoli che nel 2016 sta cominciando a esercitarsi per salire sul podio delle destinazioni preferite al mondo. Ma c’è posto anche per donna Sophia (Loren), attrice da Oscar con verace anima napoletana, sempre rivendicata con orgoglio.
Stefania Ianniello è una giovane artista che ha già percorso un cammino di formazione triennale all’Accademie di Belle arti. Con una laurea in grafica d’arte (in seguito si specializzerà anche in pittura), affronta il pubblico di strada e, dopo aver disegnato con i suoi gessetti colorati icone e caricature ispirate dall’attualità, si imbatte in Giuseppe Leone che è stato suo docente di tecniche pittoriche.
«Prof, si ricorda di me? ». In realtà, Leone, artista sannita di lungo corso, nonché maestro di tante generazioni artistiche, si è fermato perché catturato dalla potenza del disegno tracciato sull’asfalto. Si sorridono e intrecciano i contatti sui social con fluido scambio di comunicazioni creative.
Estate 2025. La rassegna Vinarte organizzata da 15 anni nel borgo medievale di Guardia Sanframondi all’interno della manifestazione Vinalia, e ideata proprio da Leone, in collaborazione con Azzurra Immediato che si occupa in particolare della sezione fotografia, è alle porte. Tema da cui parte l’intera rassegna è “Spe contra spem”: in particolare, quella concepita da Leone e Immediato, si concentra sulla speranza nell’arte delle donne.
Giuseppe telefona a Stefania e le chiede di fare parte di un gruppo al femminile: avrà la possibilità di restare lì, con la sua postazione artistica, dal primo al dieci agosto per lavorare sul luogo e esporre anche altri lavori nello spazio del Banco dei pegni, denso di passato.
Un lavoro affascinante che le consente, grazie a una struttura di legno con foglio trasparente (acetato) di ritrarre chi passa per ammirare i suoi dipinti e farsi immortalare.
Accende con loro, uomini e donne, una corrente emotiva fortissima, che termina nella firma di ciascuna persona dipinta: è un lavoro in simbiosi, possibile perché si attiva una complicità di sensazioni, indispensabile per far nascere la scintilla creativa.
Ma alle pareti del Banco dei pegni, tra le altre opere, si impongono all’attenzione di chi osserva anche figure che provocano brividi di stupore: per esempio, sembra di toccarli quei due che si abbracciano con intensità, traducendo il sentimento in immagine toccante.
Ed è questa che guida, Stefania, nei prossimi passi: la volontà emotiva che la condurrà a rompere la compiutezza figurativa, puntando a fermare l’istante che attraversa cuore e mente solo in un gesto o in una mano.
Camminando nella vita, si è resa conto che doveva prendere un’unica direzione, quella dell’arte, che l’ha portata, poi, a frequentare la scuola italiana di Comix, fondata a Napoli da Mario Punzo nel 1994, dedicata all’illustrazione e al fumetto, diventandone, assistente di corsi.
Fatti coraggio. Il nostro desiderio ci aiuta più di quanto faccia il nostro destino: un’eredità di pensiero presa in prestito dall’Otello di Shakespeare. Su questa traccia sta sperimentando il suo sentiero di artista.
Tra le sue sperimentazioni, ce n’è una che dura da due anni e cerca casa in accademie o università: un attraversamento creativo che passa per recitazione, danza, scrittura e musica grazie alla partecipazione di 90 professionisti che si fanno coinvolgere, tra l’altro, in un gioco grafico e in una chiacchierata.
Di più Stefania non svela, però, mentre racconta questa nuova avventura, le brilla lo sguardo di passione (esercitata soprattutto ricorrendo a morbidi pastelli), la stessa che la ispirò, bambina di 3 anni, a colorare un passerotto ancora gelosamente conservato da sua madre. Uno spicchio di infanzia che contiene l’oggi e il domani. Di una giovane donna, guerriera per amore dell’arte. Che rincorre libertà e sogno.

The story/ Stefania Ianniello: the courage of painted emotions. From street art to images of feelings and hope
A rebellious, blond-orange tuft of hair. A commanding gaze. Lips pressed together in a contemptuous grimace. This is how the caricature of US President Donald Trump is presented on the pavement in front of Palazzo Zevallos on Via Toledo, Naples’ commercial and tourist artery, which in 2016 began to make its way onto the podium of the world’s favourite destinations. But there is also room for Sophia Loren, the Oscar-winning actress who has always proudly claimed her Neapolitan roots.
Stefania Ianniello is a young artist who has completed a three-year training course at the Academy of Fine Arts. She has a degree in graphic art (and will later specialise in painting), and takes to the streets. There, she draws icons and caricatures inspired by current events with her coloured chalks. It is there that she encounters Giuseppe Leone, who was her teacher of painting techniques.
“Professor, do you remember me?”. In fact, Leone — a renowned Samnite artist and teacher to many generations of artists — had stopped because he was captivated by the power of the drawing on the asphalt. They smiled at each other and exchanged social media contacts, engaging in a fluid exchange of creative ideas.
Summer 2025. The Vinarte exhibition, organised for 15 years as part of the Vinalia event in the medieval village of Guardia Sanframondi, and conceived by Leone himself in collaboration with Azzurra Immediato — who is particularly involved in the photography section — is just around the corner. The overarching theme of the exhibition is ‘Spe contra spem’: Leone and Immediato’s section focuses specifically on hope in women’s art.
Giuseppe invites Stefania to join a women’s group and offers her the opportunity to set up her artistic station there from the 1st to the 10th of August, where she can work on site and exhibit other pieces in the Banco dei Pegni (Pawnshop), a historic venue.
This fascinating job allows her to use a wooden structure with a transparent sheet of acetate to portray passers-by admiring her paintings and take their portraits.
She creates a powerful emotional connection with her subjects, which culminates in each person’s signature being painted. It is a symbiotic work, made possible by activating a sense of complicity, which is essential for sparking creativity.
But among other works on the walls of the pawnshop, figures that provoke shivers of amazement also catch the observer’s attention. For example, it seems as if you can touch the two figures embracing each other intensely; this feeling is translated into a touching image.
This emotional desire will guide Stefania in her next steps, leading her to break with figurative completeness in order to capture the moment that crosses the heart and mind in a single gesture or hand movement.
As she walked through life, she realised that she had to pursue art, which led her to attend the Italian School of Comics in Naples, founded by Mario Punzo in 1994. There, she became a course assistant specialising in illustration and comics.
Take courage. It is our desire that helps us more than our destiny: a legacy of thought borrowed from Shakespeare’s Othello. Stefania is following this path and experimenting with her artistic journey.
One of her experiments has been ongoing for two years and is now looking for a home at an academy or university. This creative journey involves acting, dance, writing and music, and is made possible by the participation of 90 professionals, who are involved in activities such as a graphic game and a chat.
Stefania does not reveal any more, but as she talks about this new adventure, her eyes shine with passion — a passion she expresses primarily through soft pastels — the same passion that inspired her to colour a sparrow when she was three years old, a drawing that her mother still treasures. A memory of childhood that encompasses the present and the future.
This is the story of a young woman and an artist who fights for her passion. She pursues freedom and dreams.
