Teatro a cielo aperto a Chiaiano.

The festival in Chiaiano / ‘Oltre la luna’: open-air theatre with a touch of rock. Penelope is also there with her textile atlas of unknown places

Open-air theatre in Chiaiano. From Friday the 6th November until Saturday the 5 December, the festival “Minuscoli Maiuscoli – Beyond the Moon. An epic community rock” – conceived and directed by Simona Di Maio and Sebastiano Coticelli – takes place,
“Rock, adventure and the epic”: a fascinating theme that will take the audience on an extraordinary journey, transforming individual and collective stories into forms of social reconstruction, cultural resistance and shared storytelling. In search of lost things.
It will be a festival spread across various venues: from the Giovanni XXIII Auditorium and the Green House Care Home to the local market and schools. Key to the initiative: the participation of children, teenagers, families and the elderly.
Live performances will take place across the area, with programmes designed for all age groups, fostering intergenerational dialogue and inclusion—open to blind and visually impaired people—whilst focusing on international cultures, art projects on women’s empowerment and social resistance.
It kicks off on Friday at 5 pm with Club27 (written and performed by Ippolito Chiarello) at the Green House Care Home (Via G.A. Campano, 62), with further performances on 7 November (at 11 am at the Chiaiano Market and at 7 pm at the Giovanni XXIII Auditorium). A radio and theatrical journey through rock legends – from Jimi Hendrix to Jim Morrison and Amy Winehouse – exploring music, words and imagery.
This will be followed on Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th of November by Passaggio Segreto (produced by Il Teatro nel Baule) at the Giovanni XXIII Auditorium at 4.30 pm and 6.00 pm: a sound and tactile exploration accessible to blind and visually impaired people, a poetic and sensory experience to be enjoyed with eyes closed, divided into three rooms (Love, Death and The Universe) featuring sounds and voices recorded using a binaural microphone. Directed by Sebastiano Coticelli and Simona Di Maio, starring Caterina Modafferi, Ludovica Sodo and Lucia Straccamore.
The founders explain: ‘Oltre la Luna is an invitation to set out together in search of what we often risk losing: desires, courage, memories and relationships. We have envisaged a deeply participatory festival, accessible to all, where the audience is never merely a passing spectator, but the very heart of the on-stage action. We transform the local area into an open-air workshop of beauty, inclusion and sharing. Chiaiano is therefore not merely the setting for the festival, but a vibrant protagonist, a cradle in which the community can rediscover itself as an active part of a single, great narrative.”
Not just performances, but also workshops and educational activities, which will involve the whole community in ongoing programmes (all accessible to people with disabilities). It all begins with Battiti in bottiglia (a body percussion course for children) on the 3rd, 4th, 9th, 24th, 25th and 26th November at the Giovanni XXIII Primary School. Led by Michela Miccio, the course uses the body, voice, instruments and simple materials to discover the rich sounds of our everyday lives: the work will culminate in the final parade on 5 December.
Of particular note is Penelope and the Textile Atlas of Unknown Places (a narrative sewing course for women and mothers aged 18 and over), every Wednesday until 25 November (5.00–7.00 pm), led by Maria Isabel Albertini; it will be inspired by the Chilean Arpilleras technique. These are fabric works that Chilean women sewed in the 1970s to voice their dissent against Pinochet’s dictatorial regime. In Chiaiano, embroidery and the reuse of fabrics will produce emotional and collective maps of the neighbourhood.
The project is organised by the theatre company Il Teatro nel Baule in collaboration with Cgd Napoli ets and I.c. Giovanni XXIII, and is supported under the FNSV 2026 public call for proposals issued by the City of Naples.
