Un piccolo e lucido atto di resistenza contro la rassegnazione. Per spezzare l’inerzia. Nasce da questa spinta il Mario Puzo festival corto a capo diretto da Umberto Rinaldi, nato dodici anni fa, e pronto a riaccendere i motori dal 19 al 24 agosto, tra le province di Avellino e Benevento.
Un presidio culturale e un progetto politico per rimettere le aree interne al centro del dibattito comune. Oltre alle sette sezioni in gara (cortometraggi, documentari e lungometraggi), due promosse in collaborazione con i partner Officine sostenibili e Slow food Avellino, il programma si arricchisce dei tradizionali aperitivi cinematografici.
Quest’anno saranno accompagnati dalla presentazione del secondo numero della riviste CineMOI, e del nuovo documentario di cinema partecipato, dedicato proprio al tema dello spopolamento e ai possibili scenari di rinascita dei territori.
Inversione di Tendenza. Strategie per opporsi ad un cronicizzato declino è il tema di questa dodicesima edizione. E racconterà come in quelle aree che le stesse istituzioni vedono destinate a un inesorabile declino, non si cerca solo un dignitoso invecchiamento ma si estendono sguardi e percorsi di speranza, progetti di vita e sociali all’avanguardia.
Si parte oggi mercoledì 19 agosto. Dopo l’inaugurazione a Tufo in mattinata, Adriano Della Starza (docente, youtuber e critico cinematografico) presenta il volume John Ford e Clint Eastwood: I due sentieri del giuramento.
Maura Delpero, tra i nomi di punta del cinema italiano contemporaneo, porterà la sua visione dopo il trionfo con Vermiglio (vincitore di due premi alla Mostra del Cinema di Venezia 2024, quattro David di Donatello e designato come film italiano agli Oscar 2025).
Giovedì 20 agosto – spazio alla magia del grande schermo con Sergio Stivaletti, maestro degli effetti speciali che ha legato il suo nome ai capolavori di Dario Argento.
A Stivaletti verrà consegnato un premio speciale alla carriera; l’autore incontrerà il pubblico per svelare i segreti degli effetti speciali e presenterà il suo film Rabbia Furiosa – Er canaro.
Dal 20 inizieranno le proiezioni quotidiane della mattina e del pomeriggio e venerdì 21 ci sarà anche l’apertura con l’Archivio Audiovisivo Irpino, la presentazione Fuori Concorso del cortometraggio Fenice di Domenico Pizzulo e la proiezione del laboratorio partecipato Inesorabile declino diretto da Giustino Pennino.
Sabato 22 agosto una riflessione politica e sociale del festival a Venticano, sul futuro delle aree interne che culminerà con la proiezione del film Ritorno al tratturo presentato dal regista Francesco Cordio.
Domenica 23 agosto a Tufo dalle 10 il workshop GENIUS LOCI a cura del collettivo Zauber Laboratorio di cinema, territorio e Spiritualità. A San Giorgio del Sannio invece, la presentazione del volume sul cinema inglese Giorni di gloria a cura del critico Giuseppe Borrone e in serata Riccardo Scamarcio sarà protagonista di una intervista/masterclass sulla sua carriera internazionale.
Lunedì 24 agosto, si chiude a Montefusco con le proiezioni dei lavori in concorso e fuori concorso, l’assegnazione dei premi e del riconoscimento del pubblico, alla presenza di autori e cast, e dell’ l’intervista e premiazione a Renato Carpentieri.
Nel programma si inserisce la mostra fotografica a cura di Paolo Speranza, autore e critico cinematografico, dedicata a Ettore Scola, un maestro del cinema italiano, a10 anni dalla sua scomparsa.

Avellino & Benevento – The Mario Puzo Short Film Festival is back (19 – 24 August). Riccardo Scamarcio will also be there
A small yet powerful act of resistance against resignation. To break the deadlock. It is from this impetus that the Mario Puzo Short Film Festival, directed by Umberto Rinaldi, was born twelve years ago, and is now set to kick off once again from the 19th to the 24th of August, across the provinces of Avellino and Benevento.
A cultural hub and a political project aimed at putting inland areas back at the centre of public debate. In addition to the seven competition sections (short films, documentaries and feature films), two of which are organised in collaboration with partners Officine Sostenibili and Slow Food Avellino, the programme is enriched by the traditional film-themed aperitifs.
This year, these will be accompanied by the launch of the second issue of the magazine CineMOI, and the new participatory documentary, dedicated specifically to the theme of depopulation and possible scenarios for the revitalisation of these regions.
‘Reversing the Trend: Strategies to Counter Chronic Decline’ is the theme of this twelfth edition. It will explore how, in those areas that the institutions themselves deem destined for inexorable decline, people are not merely seeking a dignified way to grow old, but are also looking towards the future with hope, pursuing pioneering social and life projects.
The event kicks off today, Wednesday the 19th of August. Following the opening ceremony in Tufo this morning, Adriano Della Starza (lecturer, YouTuber and film critic) will present the book *John Ford and Clint Eastwood: The Two Paths of the Oath*.
Maura Delpero, one of the leading figures in contemporary Italian cinema, will share her perspective following the success of *Vermiglio* (winner of two awards at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, four David di Donatello awards and selected as Italy’s entry for the 2025 Oscars).
Thursday the 20th of August – the magic of the big screen takes centre stage with Sergio Stivaletti, the master of special effects whose name is inextricably linked to Dario Argento’s masterpieces.
Stivaletti will be presented with a special lifetime achievement award; he will meet the public to reveal the secrets of special effects and present his film *Rabbia Furiosa – Er canaro*.
From the 20th, daily morning and afternoon screenings will begin, and on Friday 21st there will also be the opening event featuring the Irpino Audiovisual Archive, the out-of-competition screening of Domenico Pizzulo’s short film *Fenice*, and the screening of the participatory workshop *Inexorable Decline*, directed by Giustino Pennino.
On Saturday the 22nd of August, the festival will host a political and social discussion in Venticano on the future of inland areas, culminating in a screening of the film *Ritorno al tratturo*, presented by director Francesco Cordio.
On Sunday the 23rd of August in Tufo, from 10.00, the GENIUS LOCI workshop organised by the Zauber collective – a laboratory for cinema, territory and spirituality. In San Giorgio del Sannio, meanwhile, there will be a presentation of the book on British cinema *Giorni di gloria* by the critic Giuseppe Borrone, and in the evening Riccardo Scamarcio will take part in an interview/masterclass on his international career.
On Monday the 24th of August, the festival draws to a close in Montefusco with screenings of films in and out of competition, the presentation of the awards and the audience award, in the presence of the filmmakers and cast, as well as an interview with and award presentation to Renato Carpentieri.
The programme also features a photographic exhibition curated by Paolo Speranza, author and film critic, dedicated to Ettore Scola, a master of Italian cinema, ten years after his death.
