Aspettando le cinquine dei David di Donatello, inserito già nella shortlist, “Elvira Notari. Oltre il silenzio’’ di Valerio Ciriaci, il docufilm dedicato alla prima regista italiana, sarà proiettato con ingresso libero lunedì 30 marzo alle ore 18.00 al cinema Metropolitan di Napoli
L’appuntamento fa parte del programma Marzo Donna 2026 -Il tuo nome, Donna. Chi siamo e da dove siamo partite. Interverranno Teresa Armato, assessora al turismo e alle attività produttive del Comune di Napoli, che promuove l’iniziativa, insieme alla produttrice del documentario Antonella Di Nocera. Con loro Simona Frasca, Antonella Monetti e Cristina Vatielli.
Il documentario vuole restituire la voce a una artista e donna eccezionale rimossa dalla storia: autrice, regista, montatrice, distributrice dei suoi stessi film e madre di famiglia nella Napoli del primo ‘900. Ai suoi tempi un’eccezione, ma le difficoltà e i limiti che ha dovuto affrontare somigliano ancora purtroppo a quelli delle donne di oggi.
La creatività femminile ha avuto un ruolo forte nel film: oltre alla produttrice, il montaggio di Francesca Sofia Allegra, le musiche di Silvia Cignoli, il coinvolgimento della attrice Teresa Saponangelo fotografata da Cristina Vatielli e le tante testimoni, tra cui Giuliana Bruno, Giuliana Muscio e Flavia Amabile.
Il documentario è disponibile on demand su Sky e NOW e da agosto sarà su Rai Play. Ma intanto ha iniziato il suo percorso internazionale. Dopo il passaggio al Chiayi International Art Doc Film Festival di Taiwan il film è atteso in festival asiatici in Corea del Sud e a Pechino .
In aprile ampio tour negli Stati Uniti: più di cent’anni fa, Notari portava il cinema napoletano nelle Little Italies americane senza esserci mai stata. Prima p tappa il 6 aprile a New York nella storica sala indipendente Film Forum. Seguiranno proiezioni ed incontri con regista e produttrice a Rochester, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Indianapolis, San Diego, St. Louis, Detroit e Rhinebeck, con sedi prestigiose come NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, Case Western Reserve University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Dryden Theatre, University of Pittsburgh, UCLA, Indiana University, Digital Gym Cinema, University of Southern California, Chapman University, Washington University, Detroit Film Theatre
Seguirà il tour nel Regno Unito e in Irlanda tra il 30 aprile e il 9 maggio con eventi a Edimburgo Limerick al TUS, Exeter al Phoenix, Bristol al Watershed, a Cambridge e a Londra nei prestigiosi Bertha DocHouse e Birkbeck Institute of the Moving Image .
I tour sono realizzati con il sostegno di Regione Campania e Film Commission Regione Campania, insieme ai partner coinvolti tra cui le università americane, gli Istituti Italiani di Cultura di Londra, Edimburgo e Dublino e di N.I.C.E. – New Italian Cinema Events.

While waiting for the David di Donatello nominations – with Valerio Ciriaci’s ‘Elvira Notari. Oltre il silenzio’, the documentary film dedicated to Italy’s first female director, already on the shortlist – the film will be screened free of charge on Monday the 30th of March at 6.00 pm at the Cinema Metropolitan in Naples
The event is part of the Marzo Donna 2026 programme – ‘Your Name, Woman. Who We Are and Where We Came From’. Speakers will include Teresa Armato, Councillor for Tourism and Productive Activities for the City of Naples, who is promoting the initiative, alongside the documentary’s producer, Antonella Di Nocera. They will be joined by Simona Frasca, Antonella Monetti and Cristina Vatielli.
The documentary aims to give a voice back to an exceptional artist and woman who has been erased from history: a writer, director, editor, distributor of her own films and mother in early 20th-century Naples. An exception in her times, yet the difficulties and limitations she faced unfortunately still resemble those faced by women today.
Female creativity has played a significant role in the film: in addition to the producer, the editing by Francesca Sofia Allegra, the music by Silvia Cignoli, the participation of actress Teresa Saponangelo – photographed by Cristina Vatielli – and the many interviewees, including Giuliana Bruno, Giuliana Muscio and Flavia Amabile.
The documentary is available on demand on Sky and NOW, and will be on Rai Play from August. Meanwhile, however, it has begun its international journey. Following its screening at the Chiayi International Art Doc Film Festival in Taiwan, the film is set to appear at Asian festivals in South Korea and Beijing.
In April, there will be an extensive tour of the United States: over a century ago, Notari brought Neapolitan cinema to America’s Little Italies without ever having been there herself. The first prestigious stop is on the 6th of April in New York at the historic independent cinema, Film Forum. This will be followed by screenings and meetings with the director and producer in Rochester, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Indianapolis, San Diego, St Louis, Detroit and Rhinebeck, at prestigious venues such as NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, Case Western Reserve University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Dryden Theatre, University of Pittsburgh, UCLA, Indiana University, Digital Gym Cinema, University of Southern California, Chapman University, Washington University and Detroit Film Theatre.
This will be followed by a tour of the UK and Ireland between the 30th of April and the 9th of May, with events in Edinburgh at the TUS, Limerick at the Phoenix, Bristol at the Watershed, Cambridge, and London at the prestigious Bertha DocHouse and Birkbeck Institute of the Moving Image.
The tours are organised with the support of the Campania Region and the Campania Region Film Commission, together with partners including American universities, the Italian Cultural Institutes in London, Edinburgh and Dublin, and N.I.C.E. – New Italian Cinema Events.
