Capodichino/Military Airport: Naples caught up in a whirlwind of waltzes by Strauss and Verdi

The waltz fever is revived in a journey through music, dance and historical memory. On Tuesday the 27th of October, at 6.30 pm, the Aviators’ Hall at Naples Capodichino Military Airport will host ‘Gran Valzer – Naples in the Vortex of the Waltz’, a concert-re-enactment that brings to life for the public the charm of an era (between the 18th and 19th centuries) when dancing became a cultural phenomenon and the preferred language of European social life.
The event forms part of the fifth edition of ‘Extra Moenia – Il Centro esploso’, a project by the Domenico Scarlatti Association under the artistic direction of Maestro Enzo Amato, and is part of the ‘Affabulazione’ programme organised by the City of Naples. It is a cultural initiative that brings music and performance to less conventional venues across the region, transforming them into spaces for gathering and participation.
Amedeo Colella will guide the audience through the history of the waltz with an ironic and engaging narrative that weaves together interesting facts, anecdotes and references to Naples, the musical capital of Southern Italy. A narrative designed to bring together different generations – from the youngest to the oldest members of the local community – through an artistic heritage that still resonates today.
The star of the evening will be historical dance, with Angela Rosauro and the Centro studi Danze storiche, who will stage waltzes performed by dancers in period costumes, meticulously reconstructed in accordance with historical accuracy. The vocal performances will be entrusted to the soprano Martina Bortolotti von Haderburg and the baritone Luigi Cirillo, accompanied by the Naples Chamber Orchestra.
The musical programme will create a dialogue between the compositions of Johann Strauss Jr, the ‘King of the Waltz’, and those of Giuseppe Verdi, combining the charm of the Viennese tradition with the expressive power of Italian opera. Music and dance will thus come together in a re-enactment that brings to life the atmosphere, gestures and charm of a bygone era.
The event forms part of the ‘Affabulazioni’ cycle, conceived as part of the City of Naples’ festival of the same name, and benefits from the academic supervision of Francesca Marone of the University of Naples Federico II.
Admission is free, subject to booking via the website www.extramoenia.cloud. For further information, please call 081 5437430 or email info@domenicoscarlatti.it.
