Un premio Oscar al cinema Astra. Domani, venerdì 5 aprile, alle 21 nella sala di via Mezzocannone 109 a Napoli il documentario “20 days in Mariupol” di Mstyslav Chernov, che sarà introdotto dal console ucraino a Napoli Maksym Kovalenko insieme alla giornalista Zhanna Zhukova e racconta i giorni più terribili della guerra in Ucraina.
L’evento della rassegna “AstraDoc – Viaggio nel cinema del reale” sarà anticipato da un altro film che racconta ancora un fronte di crisi internazionale, “The lost souls of Syria” in programma alle 19. Le due proiezioni si svolgono grazie alla collaborazione con la rivista Internazionale e Cineagenzia nell’ambito della loro rassegna Mondovisioni che porta in Italia documentari su attualità, diritti umani e informazione selezionati e premiati dai maggiori festival internazionali.
Si parte, dunque, dal Medioriente con l’opera di Garance Le Caisne e Stéphane Malterre “The Lost Souls of Syria” (Francia-Germania, 2022, 99’) presentato nel 2022 all’International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Nel 2014 sono state pubblicate ventisettemila foto di detenuti civili torturati a morte trafugate dagli archivi segreti del regime siriano da un disertore militare con il nome in codice Caesar. L’opera indaga l’impotenza della giustizia internazionale nel perseguire il criminale Stato siriano. Mentre il caso sembra destinato all’oblio, le famiglie delle vittime, insieme agli attivisti e allo stesso Caesar, cercano verità e giustizia attraverso i tribunali di tutta Europa: oltre cinque anni di indagini e battaglie porteranno al primo processo contro gli alti funzionari responsabili della macchina della morte siriana.
Premio Oscar al Miglior Documentario e vincitore del Premio del Pubblico al Sundance Film Festival “20 Days in Mariupol” narra la tragedia vissuta dal popolo ucraino. Alla vigilia dell’invasione russa dell’Ucraina una squadra di giornalisti entra nella città portuale di Mariupol.
Durante il successivo assedio, mentre cadono le bombe, gli abitanti fuggono e l’accesso a elettricità, cibo e acqua è interrotto, i reporter, unici rimasti, lottano per raccontare le atrocità della guerra finché circondati dai soldati russi si rifugiano in un ospedale, in trappola. Le loro immagini, diffuse dai media mondiali, documentano morte e distruzione e smentiranno la disinformazione russa. Di fronte a tanto dolore il regista e giornalista ucraino Mstyslav Chernov si chiede se filmare ancora possa fare qualche differenza, ma sono gli stessi cittadini di Mariupol a implorarlo di continuare, perché il mondo sia testimone.

Cinema Astra/ The Oscar-winning documentary “20 Days in Mariupol”: the worst days of the Ukrainian war
An Oscar winner at the Astra cinema. Tomorrow, Friday, April 5th, at 9 p.m., the documentary “20 days in Mariupol” by Mstyslav Chernov will be shown at the theater on via Mezzocannone 109 in Naples. The Ukrainian consul in Naples, Maksym Kovalenko, will introduce the film along with journalist Zhanna Zhukova. The film tells about the most terrible days of the war in Ukraine.
The event of the “AstraDoc – Journey in the Cinema of the Real” review will be preceded by another film about another international crisis front, “The lost souls of Syria” scheduled at 7 p.m. The two screenings are held thanks to the collaboration with Internazionale magazine and Cineagenzia as part of their Mondovisioni review, which brings to Italy documentaries on current affairs, human rights, and information selected and awarded by major international festivals.
So it starts in the Middle East with Garance Le Caisne and Stéphane Malterre’s “The Lost Souls of Syria” (France-Germany, 2022, 99′), which will be presented at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in 2022. Twenty-seven thousand photos of civilian detainees tortured to death, stolen from the Syrian regime’s secret archives by a military defector codenamed Caesar, were released in 2014. The work examines the impotence of international justice in prosecuting the criminal Syrian state. While the case seems doomed to oblivion, the families of the victims, together with activists and Caesar himself, seek truth and justice in courts across Europe: more than five years of investigation and struggle will lead to the first trial of the senior officials responsible for the Syrian death machine.
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, “20 Days in Mariupol” chronicles the tragedy of the Ukrainian people. On the eve of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a team of journalists enters the port city of Mariupol.
During the ensuing siege, as bombs fall, residents flee, and access to electricity, food, and water is cut off, the reporters, the only ones left, struggle to cover the atrocities of war, until surrounded by Russian soldiers, they take refuge in a hospital, trapped. Their images, broadcast by the world’s media, document death and destruction and refute Russian disinformation. In the face of so much pain, Ukrainian filmmaker and journalist Mstyslav Chernov wonders if filming more will make any difference, but it is the citizens of Mariupol themselves who implore him to continue, so that the world may be witness.
