Mostra d’Oltremare / Following the fire, the Sannazaro reopens from Mediterranean theatre. Tradition takes centre stage, with Café Chantant

Following the fire on the 17th of February, a glimmer of hope. The Sannazaro Theatre reopens tomorrow, the 16th of October, at 9.00 pm. The stage hosting its return is that of the MeTeatro Mediterraneo theatre: the programme begins with Café Chantant – My World by Lara Sansone, a cornerstone of the Sannazaro tradition that was on stage precisely when the fire in 2025 reduced the Chiaia theatre to ashes.
Lara Sansone herself explains: ‘We’re starting afresh from ourselves – from a show that embodies our identity. Over thirty years, we’ve worked on this production in a unique way to make it an encounter between music, acting and singing with the audience. The many sold-out performances that have accompanied this work show that the audience has understood our intentions and is following us. So we’re starting afresh from ourselves, convinced that there could be no better beginning.’
Starring Lara Sansone, with Lucio Pierri, Massimo Peluso, Mario Aterrano and Toni Guido on stage, accompanied by the orchestra and the ballet company. The creative team includes: Michele Gigi for set design, Ettore Gatta as composer, Alessandro Di Napoli as choreographer, and Luisa Gorgi Marchese and Mariano Ranno for costumes. Joining them are Luigi Della Monica for lighting, Ciro Florio for make-up and hair, and Carmine Russo for props.
‘Café Chantant’ is a variety show that breaks down all barriers with the audience. The armchairs of the Teatro Mediterraneo leave way for small tables, transforming the auditorium into a genuine café-concert: the performers welcome the audience right at the entrance, immersing them in live music even before the curtain rises.
The orchestra, the dance troupe and the performers bring to life a captivating stage spectacle that moves effortlessly from a musical number to a comic sketch, right through to grand ensemble choreographies. A success that continues to be renewed and reaffirmed, celebrating thirty years of magic, emotion and boundless theatricality.
