Volti gioiosi e sorridenti, sguardi sbrilluccicanti come stelle, attoniti dinanzi a cotanta bellezza.

Istituto Statale Virgilio IV/ Letter from Scampia to institutions: “Make the Cultural Foster Care project permanent. This is how the inhabitants of the area have discovered Beauty.”

“Beauty will save the world: the challenge of Scampia takes the field.” Appointment Friday, Feb. 10, 2023 (9:30 a.m.) at the Virgil IV State Institute Auditorium.
A courageous idea that starts from this very school in collaboration with Affido Culturale, “to witness the fight against educational poverty and the beauty of culture that, if made available to families, can offer a real and concrete lifeline.”
In the more than 2 years of the Cultural Foster Care project (from September 2020, selected by the social enterprise With Children under the Fund for Combating Educational Poverty among Children), 60 families in the area have been involved. And during this period, their impressions were collected, in part and with extreme delicacy, in an open letter to the institutions, by teacher Elvira Quagliarella, referent for the project in the partner school Istituto Comprensivo Statale Virgilio IV. She emphasizes the value and importance for the people of Scampia to approach masterpieces they did not know.
The following is an excerpt of the feelings included in the letter:AFFIDO CULTURALE offered us the opportunity to appropriate the beauty of culture by allowing us to have extraordinary experiences and emotions together. There were many families among us, in which adults and children had never entered a library or a museum. Children who did not know what a summer camp, a creative workshop was; families who did not know the historic center of Naples and its history. Because not everyone has the same opportunities to access culture.
The experiences we had were the occasion for the birth of new friendships, both among adults and children with outbursts of generosity and human solidarity that we struggle to find nowadays. Joyful and smiling faces, gleaming looks like stars, astonished before such beauty. Moms, dads and children wrapped in our dignity, tired as we proceeded through those streets of the historic center so full of lights, colors, people, carrying in our arms the youngest members of the group, hands outstretched, voices testifying our presence, our being there so that we would no longer feel invisible to the world.”

Educational poverty is a difficult condition to acknowledge to oneself and to others. Especially when this phenomenon develops within places we would call “periphery”: territorial contexts often excluded or limited by many goods and services.
The project targeted 900 families throughout Italy: so many individuals were finally able to visit museums, historical centers, theaters, bookstores, educational farms, science centers, showing genuine amazement, enthusiasm, surprise and emotions that underscore how much culture is really a necessary good.
The occasion of the meeting the day after tomorrow in Naples, strongly desired by school head Lucia Vollaro, is intended to emphasize, in fact, the importance of transforming a project idea by its very nature temporary in time and provisional in funds into a permanent, stably funded service. “The difficulties that families face in organizing a cultural outing may be logistical may be organizational, certainly economic, but they cannot – and must not – represent an objective limitation to the cultural and emotional growth of each citizen of Naples residing in Scampia.”
The program of Friday’s event will take place in the morning, starting at 9 a.m. In addition to institutional greetings by the Headmistress, there will be speeches by Campania Region Councillor Lucia Fortini, Naples City Council Councillor Maura Striano, and VIII Municipality Vice President Anna Distinto. Also scheduled are reports from the project referents including Fabrizia Paternò Superintendent of Pio Monte della Misericordia, as the national lead institution,
Also of note will be the presence of Mario Di Costanzo, archiepiscopal delegate of the culture sector Archdiocese of Naples; Graziella Caliendo, accountability liaison – NONPI District 28 – ASL NA 1; and Daniela Giordano, a family lawyer from the Juvenile Court, always at the side of the school in supporting families. Their participation will draw to the attention of the public the ‘social impact that an initiative such as Cultural Fostering, has had in the area.
